Jelovičko vrelo

The strongest karstic source in Easter Serbia is known and explored from the eighties but with now surveying or any drawings till 2012. The cave is with one channel, imposing dimensions for Serbia and cristal clear water during summer. Chanel is falling fast to 45-50m depth, slightly curving for cca 200m after abruptly ending in blocks. Way further was not detected till this visit.

Weekend goal was to reach the end of the cave and look for way further. There is always possibility for that, but there were already several attempts during this year, by other teams. Moral was high, but expectation was moderate. Majority gathered late at night while few were still on a road towards the location. From the beginning, it was obvious that a crowd is big and following of strict schedule will be mandatory.

Diving club Otters offer unselfishly support with installing the line in the first part, cleaning restriction and positioning Deco and bailout stages.

Sunday morning went better than planned. The spirit was high, rig equipped and in a water before first sunbeam. Everything worked as Swiss clock. The end was reached in no time and scanning started. Dejan went for upper part and try few tight passages. One was passable barley, but already it was success, we have found it. Chanel after restriction look bit wider, curving right after but it is possible that it would lead further.

Matija decided to try luck on the bottom part. Rock and fallen block are quite a sharp there and caution is mandatory for any torn of a dry suit will result at least in serious hypothermia. Just to reach this point in the cave it is needed up to 20 min while to exist without wasting any time is approx 60 min of total run time. We were expecting dive, with deck, up to 120 min in 8-9 degrees water.

After first few meters it came obvious that this is way for future advancement. Left side was a wall while right and top were huge falen and jammed blocks. In the distance, bigger chamber was visible. Excitement was truly high and serious control was needed to back up from reaching it on this dive. The plan was already achieved, predetermined returning time reached, although we could do this there was no reason not to leave it for a next visit.
